Hello I’ve just rediscovered this lovely item, I wonder if anyone can tell me more about it, I think it’s a humidor or cigarette holder, I can’t think of anything else, not sure how old it is, it has a sticker still & looks very old

Beautiful...he was an italian sculptor....he died in 1922 and i would think by looking at this it appears very art deco...although could be earlier as later works were normally marked studio of prof g bessi.....could be a humidor or even part of a vanity set...as he made them as well as trinket boxes...

Oh thanks leesa great help and information. I had no idea it was so old I was thinking it looked early from the sticker, also I’m not ???? sure about humidor but think I saw someone using something like this for cigarettes in a old movie, I will look up the sculpture later, how interesting

Giuseppe Bessi's great-grandson Pedro converted the workshop into a gallery shop selling typical Volterra craft products. I think this Onyx item dates from the 1970s when Onyx items were very popular.

I did not know his great grandson restarted the gallery....may well be from the 70's....either way lovely piece of onyx.
