      This is indeed a Japanese bowl—showing Chinese children! It’s a popular theme known as “karako”. You can read about it here:

      You can find variations of this design on pottery and also on furoshiki, kimono obi and so forth.

      And this shape of bowl is usually used to hold a single serving of steamed rice, I believe.
