Hello, I have several of these metal boxes. 3 1/2" W by 3 3/4" high by about 13" long. I guess they are made of stainless, as a magnet sticks. Old, light weight, lotta precision, seams are really tight. I might guess safe deposit boxes, but they are kinda light with a full cover, and don't seem to have a huge amount of wear. Cover sits on top. Bright and shiny. Insides are quite clean. Any ideas what they were made for? This web site is the BEST! Thanks.
Mebbe from an old "Hoosier" type kitchen cabinet?? I don't know, just a guess...and they also might be nickel plated tin instead of stainless steel...another guess there...?
At first I was thinking bread loaf boxes, but the size doesn't fit. With the little handle, I agree with AO that maybe they were in a cubby style cabinet?
Yeah, don't think its for bread. 2 people thought that they might be for medical supplies (one mentioned pipettes), maybe for sterile. (hence made of stainless. Another thought nickel plated tin, but a magnet will stick to these) Now I have to figure out what I am going to use them for!!! LOL

I read that magnets stick to some stainless. Depends on the strength of the magnet, and the composition of the stainless. Magnets do stick to SS fridges. They warn you not to use em so as not to scratch the surface.
Has to have a high Fe content for a magnet to stick. Nickel alloy usually destroys that attraction. Of course there are other alloys that show different properties. In other words, Me not know Mon!
