    Our house had a ice box in the breakfast room. Apparently when refrigerators were readily available the icebox was converted to cupboards. We expanded the kitchen and eliminated the breakfast room.

      I don't think I've ever seen one that protruded outward from an outside wall.

      Here's one that looked more like the conventional icebox, but it was built-in, because it had an outside access door for the ice delivery man:
