This Japanese porcelain bowl is 4.5" (11.4 cm) in diameter x 2" (5 cm) high and weighs 4.1 ounces (116 gm). It is marked "Hand Paint Made in Japan" surrounding a cherry blossom on the bottom. Maker unknown, but I have seen this cherry blossom mark before. I think it is pre-WWII, 1920s-1930s, so almost 100 years old. It is so thin that it is translucent, so thin that it is hard to understand how it survived traveling to a thrift shop where I paid $1 for it today, but it is in pristine condition.

It was a bit nerve wracking to transport it home, wash and photograph it. I put it in one of my china cabinets where it will be safe until the next New Madrid fault earthquake.

It has a very colorful, classic Japanese floral design. The feet are also partially painted on the outside. I have seen similar pieces described as condiment bowls. They often had a matching under plate, so I may go back to the thrift shop and see if I can find a matching plate.

Today, I also found a Kosta Boda snowball votive candle holder for $1 and a glass flower frog that fits perfectly into a standard pint drinking glass for $2. Yesterday, I found a Stiffle candlestick lamp for $3.92,minus shade but with the original finial. I am addicted to Stiffel lamps.
