      Ruby flashing is done on blown glass by adding a thin layer of ruby glass over clear glass. The ruby stain done here is a painted on color that is then fired to set the stain. Staining is much more susceptible to scratching and doesn't have the crisp lines as cut-to-clear ruby flashed glass. Thus these stained items were popular for souvenirs, as the stain could easily be 'engraved' by mechanically scratching off the stain to personalize each piece.
