I use this for pulling slates to make repairs on church roofs. I have several. This looks to be the oldest one. The tool is stamped "Stroltz-Philadelphia". They have been in business in Philadelphia since 1853. Some of their tools are made in Germany.

Hi Ron. Do you have the other two parts that make up the slating set? There is a slate hammer and a slate anvil that go with the ripper. Nice old tool, and great that it is still in service.

Slate ripping tool. Stortz steel tended to last longer and keep an edge better. They also work well for replacing asbestos shingles in the middle of a roof without damaging good shingles.

I keep the slate hammer in my truck. I never used an anvil. I was taught how to cut the slates on a headstone in an old Quaker cemetery.

I lost my ripper and pine hammer in the 1967 bush fires in Tasmania and could not replays them in Tasmania.
