One of my favorite pieces of jewelry. Ive never been able to make out the 1st of the hallmarks. I know that 850 is purity. I believe X is a British import mark. The Y represents the date, but which year I'm not certain. If anyone can help me with the hallmark I would be grateful.

It's lovely! From what I can find online, the X signifies that the brooch was imported into the UK and was assayed in Edinburgh. The 'y' date letter is confusing as it looks as though the tail is flicked to the right instead of the left & the mark to the left is also difficult to make out. Sometimes it is possible to make the hallmark easier to read if you rub some dry icing sugar or cornflour onto it before taking the photo.

I appreciate the tip. I will give it a try.
