The detail is quite awesome; even the back has decorations. I'm not sure of its age. Best guess so far is 1868 - 1949.

I think the front mark is that of the painter. The back mark is "Kutani zo" (made by Kutani).

    Diameter: 8-1/2"

I think the back mark is KUTANI TZUKURU .... Made in Kutani.
According to this site that mark is rarely seen:
      http://gotheborg.com/marks/kutani.shtml

Check out mark 922 for the mark on the front. The second character is Zan .... different to BIZAN but it will give you a start to your search.

Thanks vetraio50 for the leads. I did find that site, but evidently didn't pay close enough attention (it was around 4am in my defense).

I also found this site: http://www.gbouvier.com/Seal/seal_rules.php. Based on that page, I think the back is "Kutani zo" (made by Kutani).

Based on what I've read, I think the front marking is that of the painter. From the site you reference, "Many artist names ends with Zan (or in Japanese, Yama, both meaning mountain). Presumably when they get famous, they seem to take this kind of pen name. There are many Zans. Bizan, Shizan, Seizan, Kyozan, Kinzan, and Kyokuzan, just to name a few, come to mind."

Still not sure of its age. Best guess so far is 1868 - 1949. I can't find many Kutani items that depict old men or that are similar in color and design.
