I am looking for some help to ID this piece for sure. I have a few ideas but I cannot verify either of them. I think it could be a kitchen/cooking item, such as a small sauce pan, but based on its weight and size I am not so sure.

There is significant wear on this piece like it has been really beaten up. My second thought is that it could be some type of apothecary mortar or measure. The piece is solid brass and very very heavy. The brass looks hand forged, there are no mold marks or seams that I can see. It is a very solid sturdy piece built to last, but I can't figure out exactly what it is. Thanks for looking!!!

      Turkish coffee for a fire?

I thought it was a lead bullet shot maker. In the film The Patriot you can see the actors melt lead soldiers in them.

racer, I am not sure, the Turkish coffee makers are thin walled and made of copper. This is very very thick brass. geodejem, I know the tool you are talking about but this is too large to be a bullet mold. And those are usually made of iron.

I was going to suggest that it is a brass chafing dish used along side a fondue. The brass retains heat longer than copper. This looks about the right size to fit over a can of Sterno.

      Gold "smelter"?
    8. BHock45 BHock45, 9 years ago
I am not so sure about either. This is a very small item, the diameter of the bowl is 2 inches maximum.

You would melt the pot before the gold melted...
